Typically when traveling anywhere, specifically out of the country my husband and I have a structred plan for each destination so we are sure not to miss a thing.  On a trip to southern Italy, we had opted to leave our day trip to the island of Capri completely open to wander the small island enjoying it's local ambiance.

On the ferry ride over from Sorrento, we were approached by a very distinguised elderly gentleman, as were many others on the boat.  He was inquiring as to our plans for our day on the island. He was offering a full day escroted tour of all the highlights of Capri including motorcoach transportation and any admission charges for $25 USD per person.  Now typically when traveling in another country my first instinct would be to say, "No thank you", but there was something about this gentleman that peaked my curiosity.  His beautiful gray hair, sparking blue eyes, romantic accent, and he was dressed impecably!  By the time we landed Antonio, had filled his bus, so apparently others felt the same way.  He told us we must hurry for our first adventure, the Blue Grotto!

For those of you that don't know about the Blue Grotto, it is a sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri. The openings of light into the hole provide a brilliant blue light like nothing you have ever seen. Upon exiting the ferry, many small boats were waiting trying to solicit vistors to get to the Blue Grotto.  Our guide in his wisdom assured us that land would be faster than water, and he was correct.  We climbed down the cliff to find small boats waiting at the bottom.  You basically had to jump to get into the boat, but no one seemed to mind.

There is only one entry hole into the Blue Grotto and it measures approximately a meter and a half.  A small boat is barely able to fit through the hole and that is only if you all lay down flat!  As you can imagine the tide controls the entry to the Blue Grotto so it is a very short window of opportunity each day.  The waves are crashing against the rock and you think it just might be your last journey when you hit the entry hole.  Once inside the Blue Grotto is filled with an eery silence and the water is glowing blue like none other you have ever encountered.  The grotto has a long history and has been visitied by guests of the island since the early 1800's.  We were one of the lucky ones that day.  Many left disappointed that didnt make it in before the tide came.  We learned that many were repeat visitiors making multiple attempts to see the inside of the Blue Grotto.  One couple on our impromptu tour had traveled to the island TWELVE times in hopes of entering and today was their lucky day thanks to Antonio.  Our day in Capri quickly became one of our favorite of all times and I look forward to sharing more with you in the future.

The island of Capri is accessible via many cruise lines when ported in Naples or out of Sorrento when doing a land vacation.  We have a large number of cruises currently on special and I would love to help.
